How to choose a payment processor

The right processor depends on how you sell, how much you process and what industry you're in. Start with these four questions:

1
Where do you take payments?
In person, online, by invoice, or all three. Some providers are much cheaper for one channel.
2
How much do you process?
Flat rates are simplest at low volume. Above roughly $10,000 a month, interchange-plus usually costs less.
3
Is your industry restricted?
CBD, supplements, subscriptions, travel and others often need a high-risk merchant account.
4
What's the total cost?
Add monthly fees, chargeback fees and hardware to the per-transaction rate, then compare effective rates.
How we compare

Our methodology

We take rates directly from each provider's own pricing page and note the date we checked. We compare standard US pricing for card-present, online and keyed payments, monthly fees and chargeback fees.

Partners may pay us when you request a quote or sign up. That never changes the fee data we publish, and partner listings are always labeled.

FAQ

Payment processor questions

What is the cheapest credit card processor?

It depends on your volume and card mix. For small businesses, flat-rate providers like Square and Stripe are simple and predictable. As volume grows, interchange-plus providers such as Helcim, or a negotiated merchant account, are usually cheaper. Use our fee calculator to compare with your own numbers.

What's the difference between a processor and a merchant account?

Stripe, Square and PayPal are payment facilitators that put many businesses under one shared account, so signup is instant. A merchant account is underwritten for your business alone, which takes longer but usually brings more stable terms and negotiable pricing.

Why was my business declined by Stripe or Square?

Payment facilitators restrict certain industries and business models, such as CBD, supplements and some subscription offers. A specialist high-risk merchant account provider reviews these businesses individually.

How often are these rates updated?

Each listing shows the month we last checked the provider's published pricing. Providers can change rates at any time, so confirm current pricing on their website before you sign up.
